Untangle In Healthcare
The Open Source Network Gateway
Protection of patient records is of paramount importance to healthcare providers. Whether you are a large practice of family doctors or a dentist in your own rooms, the requirement to protect patient records is equal.
Patient Records and HIPAA
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Privacy Rule protects the privacy of individually identifiable health information. Under the rule this information is called "protected health information (PHI)" and relates to:
- The individual’s past, present or future physical or mental health or condition
- The provision of health care to the individual
- The past, present, or future payment for the provision of health care to the individual
Individually identifiable health information includes many common identifiers such as name, address, birth date and Social Security Number. This personally identifiable data has become a target for cyber-criminals.
The HIPAA's Security Rule governs patient records systems security requirements and systems that provide remote access to them.
Protect Patient Records
Online identity thieves have become increasingly sophisticated at transmitting software programs called Trojans into your computer network, which in turn can send patient records back out to them. Given the escalating number of attackers and the variety of methods they use, protecting your practice at your connection to the Internet is critical. Just don’t allow them to get in, in the first place.
Untangle provides a secure Internet Gateway, that protects the computers in your practice from outside attacks. By preventing unwanted intrusions into your network and protecting against Trojans entering your systems, you have a first line of defense against loss of patient records. Untangle blocks Viruses, Spyware, Spam, Phish, and Other Malware, scanning all Internet traffic for viruses, worms, spyware, phishing, and other threats to protect your network and the personal information of your patients.
