Untangle for User Management
Limit Access to Certain Sites and Services
Network managers want to ensure they have good visibility and control of who is doing what online.
User Access Issues
- Lack of insight into who the "heavy users" are of internet bandwidth
- Need to limit access to certain sites, services or at certain times of day
- Need to provide audit trails of individual users' web browsing
- Need to enable different internet access policies for different groups of users, e.g. students and staff
- Requiring users to accept terms-of-use policy before accessing the internet
- Ensuring existing login credentials for Active Directory or RADIUS servers are utilized.
Recommendation
Untangle provides several applications that work closely together to help manage user access to the internet, all included in the Untangle Standard Package.
The Untangle Policy Manager is for administrators with complex networks where one size doesn't fit all. Many organizations need to provide unique privileges to different sets of users like schools (teachers vs. students), libraries (librarians vs. public Internet terminals) or businesses with different departmental requirements (engineering vs. sales.) Policy Manager even makes it possible to block access to common productivity-killing websites like Myspace or Facebook during working hours, but keep it available during lunch and after hours. Access policies such as web content restrictions, by user name, by group name, and by time, can be set up and reports generated accordingly.
Untangle Directory Connector also couples to identity management tools like Microsoft’s Active Directory, or RADIUS. By integrating with Active Directory, Untangle makes it easy for administrators to leverage the rights and privileges they’ve already established for users on their networks. Users also benefit because they don’t have to remember any additional passwords. Even management loves the integration because leveraging Directory Connector usernames in reporting makes it easier to understand who is doing what on the network.
With Untangle Captive Portal, users can be presented with login challenge page before they gain access to the internet. This provided a very compelling reason for them to accept a click-through terms-of-use policy, or other similar user management requirements.
All of these applications are included in the Untangle Standard Package.
